Many athletes try to improve by changing what they do.
They work harder.
Train longer.
Practise more.
Sometimes that works.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
One reason is that not all change happens at the same level.
Within NLP, the Neurological Levels model provides a useful framework for understanding why some changes are temporary while others become lasting transformations.
The higher the level, the greater the influence it often has on the levels below it.
Rather than simply changing behaviour, athletes can begin understanding the deeper beliefs, values and identity that shape performance.

Ask a Question

The Neurological Levels
The model is commonly described as six interconnected levels.
Environment
Where are you?
Who are you surrounded by?
Your environment includes your training facilities, coaches, teammates, family and the situations in which you perform.
Changing your environment can influence performance, but it rarely creates lasting change on its own.
Behaviour
What do you do?
Training.
Competing.
Preparing.
Recovering.
Behaviour is what people can observe.
Many athletes focus almost entirely on behaviour while overlooking the levels that influence it. Changing habits is essential too.
Capabilities
How do you do it?
This level includes:
- Skills.
- Strategies.
- Knowledge.
- Techniques.
- Mental skills.
Improving capabilities helps athletes perform more effectively, but even highly skilled athletes sometimes underperform because of what they believe about themselves.
Beliefs and Values
Why do you do it?
This level includes:
- Confidence.
- Self-belief.
- Motivation.
- What matters most to you.
- What you believe is possible.
Beliefs can strengthen performance or quietly limit it.
Values determine what you consistently commit your energy towards.
Identity
Who are you?
Identity is often the turning point.
Rather than asking:
“Can I perform well?”
Identity asks:
“What kind of athlete am I?”
Athletes who consistently identify as resilient, disciplined and committed often find it easier to behave in ways that support those identities.
Identity influences almost everything beneath it.
Purpose
What are you part of?
For some athletes this is representing their family.
For others, inspiring teammates.
Helping younger athletes.
Representing their country.
Living according to their values.
Purpose gives meaning to everything below it and often provides strength during difficult periods.
Why This Model Matters
Many athletes become frustrated because they focus only on behaviour.
They try harder.
Train harder.
Work harder.
Yet the deeper patterns remain unchanged.
When athletes understand how beliefs, identity and purpose influence behaviour, change often becomes more sustainable.
Identity: The Highest Personal Level
One of the most powerful ideas within the Neurological Levels model is that identity influences behaviour.
Someone who believes:
“I’m a disciplined athlete.”
usually behaves differently from someone who believes:
“I’m inconsistent.”
Changing identity doesn’t happen overnight.
It develops through awareness, repeated evidence and consistent action.
This is why identity plays such an important role within the Athletes Ascend approach.
Neurological Levels Insight
Behaviour is what you do.
Identity is who you believe you are.
Changing behaviour can improve performance.
Changing identity can transform it.
Coach’s Observation
Many athletes spend years trying to change what they do.
Far fewer spend time understanding the beliefs and identity that quietly shape everything they do.
Sometimes the fastest way to change performance is to understand the level that’s creating it.
How Sports Mindset Coaching Can Help
At Athletes Ascend, we use ideas from NLP alongside modern sports psychology and performance coaching to help athletes understand themselves more deeply.
Rather than focusing only on behaviour, coaching explores confidence, beliefs, identity, habits, mental toughness and purpose so that lasting improvements become easier to achieve.
The aim isn’t simply to perform differently.
It’s to become the athlete capable of sustaining that performance. Learning how to use your inner voice to your advantage and then developing flow state will make you succeed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Neurological Levels?
Neurological Levels are an NLP model that describes different levels of human experience, including environment, behaviour, capabilities, beliefs and values, identity and purpose. They are commonly used as a coaching framework rather than a scientific description of how the brain works.
Why are Neurological Levels useful in sport?
The model encourages athletes to look beyond behaviour and consider how beliefs, values and identity influence performance and long-term development.
Is identity the most important level?
Within the model, identity is considered one of the highest personal levels because it strongly influences beliefs, behaviour and habits.
Is this based on neuroscience?
Despite the name, the Neurological Levels model comes from NLP and coaching. It is best understood as a practical framework for personal development rather than an established neuroscientific theory.
Can sports mindset coaching use this model?
Yes. Many coaches use the model to help athletes understand confidence, motivation, beliefs, identity and long-term behavioural change.
How I Work With Athletes
I combine practical sports mindset coaching with NLP, hypnotherapy where appropriate, and performance-psychology principles. The approach depends on the athlete, the sport and what is maintaining the problem. It complements technical coaching, medical care and rehabilitation rather than replacing them.
Lasting Performance Starts Beneath the Surface
The way you perform is influenced by the way you think.
The way you think is influenced by what you believe.
And what you believe is often shaped by who you believe you are.
At Athletes Ascend, we help athletes explore every level of performance—from daily behaviours to lasting identity—so they can compete with greater confidence, purpose and consistency.
