Athletes do not all think, learn or respond to pressure in the same way.
One athlete may overanalyse every movement. Another may perform freely in training but become tense when the result matters.
That is why my work does not depend on one technique.
I combine sports mindset and performance coaching with NLP, hypnotherapy where appropriate, and relevant performance-psychology principles. The approach depends on the athlete, the sport and what appears to be interfering with performance.
The aim is to understand what changes when you stop performing naturally and develop a response you can use.

Ask a Question
What Is Sports Mindset and Performance Coaching?
Sports mindset coaching focuses on the thoughts, attention, emotions, beliefs and learned responses that influence performance.
It may be useful when an athlete experiences:
- A loss of confidence.
- Competition nerves or pressure.
- Overthinking previously automatic skills.
- Fear of making mistakes.
- Difficulty trusting training.
- A movement block or yips-type problem.
- Hesitation after an injury, crash or fall.
- Inconsistent performance between training and competition.
The starting point is always specific. “Improve my mindset” is too broad. We need to identify what happens, when it happens and what changes physically, mentally or behaviourally.
The wider sports performance problems section helps athletes recognise some of these patterns.
How I Use NLP With Athletes
NLP in sport explores how language, attention, internal experience and learned associations may influence performance.
An athlete may repeatedly say:
Don’t miss. Don’t freeze. Don’t do it again.
Although the athlete is trying to prevent a mistake, their attention remains fixed on the feared outcome. NLP can help examine how the athlete represents the situation internally and develop language or cues that are more useful during performance.
It may explore:
- How previous experiences have become connected with present situations.
- The meaning an athlete attaches to mistakes.
- How beliefs influence commitment and decision-making.
- Changes in imagery, sound, feeling or self-talk.
The general What Is NLP? page explains the approach in more detail.
NLP is not a medical treatment, and I do not present it as a guaranteed solution. I use selected techniques within a broader coaching process when they fit the athlete and the problem.
How Hypnotherapy May Support Sports Performance
Hypnotherapy uses focused attention and suggestion to work with established thoughts, feelings and responses.
In sport, it may be used to support:
- Confidence and performance preparation.
- More useful responses to pressure.
- Mental rehearsal where appropriate.
- Reducing excessive conscious interference.
- Changing learned emotional associations.
Hypnosis is not mind control; the athlete retains awareness and choice. It does not replace practice, technical coaching, fitness or preparation.
Some athletes respond well to imagery. Others have aphantasia and do not create voluntary mental pictures. Work must adapt to how the athlete processes experience. Aphantasia in sport explains why visualisation should never be compulsory.
Hypnotherapy may be one part of the work, but it is not automatically used with everyone.
Inner Voice Awareness™
Inner Voice Awareness™ is my framework for helping athletes understand how their minds operate before attempting to change anything.
Some athletes experience strong internal commentary. Others think through imagery, feeling, sound, rhythm or concepts. Some experience little internal speech, explored in anendophasia in sport.
This matters because generic mental-performance advice often assumes everyone thinks in the same way.
Inner Voice Awareness™ identifies what the athlete is actually experiencing so coaching becomes more individual and relevant.
Flow State Activation™
Flow State Activation™ is my framework for helping athletes create conditions that make natural, absorbed performance more likely.
Flow cannot be guaranteed or forced. Chasing it may make performance more self-conscious.
Instead, the work may involve:
- Clear goals and appropriate challenge.
- Useful attentional cues.
- Trusting trained movement.
- Reducing unnecessary internal supervision.
- Responding constructively to mistakes.
- Preparing consistently without demanding a particular feeling.
Inner Voice Awareness™ creates understanding. Flow State Activation™ helps apply that understanding to performance.
Choosing the Right Approach
The thing is, the method should follow the problem.
An athlete struggling with sports confidence may need evidence and commitment. Someone caught in overthinking in sport may need a clearer transition into execution.
An athlete experiencing performance anxiety may need help understanding physical activation, expectations and attention. A competitor dealing with yips and performance blocks may also require technical or medical assessment.
Someone returning after an accident may need medical clearance, rehabilitation and sport-specific coaching alongside psychological support. The psychological return after a crash or fall section explains this.
There is no responsible reason to force every athlete through the same process simply because one method worked for somebody else.
What This Work Does Not Replace
My work is sports mindset and performance coaching. I am not presenting myself as a sport and exercise psychologist.
Coaching, NLP and hypnotherapy do not replace:
- Medical diagnosis or treatment.
- Mental-health care.
- Physiotherapy or rehabilitation.
- Neurological assessment.
- Technical instruction from a qualified sports coach.
- Safeguarding or emergency support.
Persistent, unexplained or severe symptoms may require another professional. Good coaching includes knowing its boundaries.
How We May Work Together
The process begins by understanding the actual difficulty rather than assuming the cause.
We may explore:
- When performance changes.
- What the athlete notices immediately beforehand.
- Where attention moves.
- What happens physically and technically.
- What the athlete predicts, fears or tries to control.
- Which coaching method fits the individual.
- How the new response can be practised in relevant conditions.
The objective is practical change that transfers into training and competition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you use hypnosis with every athlete?
No. Hypnotherapy is used only where it appears appropriate and the athlete is comfortable with it.
Is NLP the same as sports psychology?
No. NLP is a coaching approach. It may sit alongside performance-psychology principles, but the terms are not interchangeable.
Do I need to be able to visualise?
No. Coaching and hypnotherapy can use language, sensation, movement, sound, rhythm, concepts and real-world rehearsal.
Can this help with the yips?
It may help where attention, anticipation, fear or conscious interference contribute. Persistent involuntary movements may also require technical and medical assessment.
Find the Approach That Fits the Athlete
You do not need to decide whether you require NLP, hypnotherapy or coaching before making contact.
Begin with what is happening in your sport.
From there, we can consider what may be maintaining the difficulty, which form of support is appropriate and whether I am the right person to help.
